What do we do?
We are passionate about land, rural economies and real food. We want everyone who would like to grow food; for themselves, for their family or to make a living, to have access to enough land to do so.
The Land Society is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving rural economies. This website is one of our projects that arranges to buy large areas of agricultural land and split it up between people like you; Members who want to buy or rent a piece of it. You may choose anything from an allotment plot to a 5 acre smallholding, and you can either own title by buying the land, or you can rent it on a long secure lease.
You can Register for free to search for land for sale or rent, to receive monthly updates or add your name to rent land, but to join in to buy land you have to become a Member of the Society. Take a look at ‘Registration and Membership’ to find out more.
When sufficient Members register that they want to buy a particular larger piece of land, we make the offer on behalf of all of them and arrange the purchase. Then we divide the land between those Members. You get your own piece of land, and sometimes we’ll buy the remainder to rent out.
You don’t pay your money to us; you pay for your land directly into a solicitor’s client account and they will complete all the legal aspects of the purchase on your behalf. By splitting the cost of all purchasers through one solicitor, each Member saves substantially on their legal costs. We just help organise it so it all goes smoothly.
We charge a small premium on land sales (part of the purchase price) to cover our costs and use any and all profits we make to purchase more land to rent out as allotments and smallholdings. If you prefer to rent from us you will benefit from a long term lease in clear language and with minimal conditions.
We want you to be able to grow good, healthy food for your family and maybe produce a surplus for others to share, and we’ll try to help you do this. Over time we’ll share lots of advice, information and help on our website.
